Inclusionary Preschool and Child Care

The Carmen B. Pingree Community Preschool (CP) & Child Care program strives to provide an outstanding, inclusive early childhood experience for children with and without special needs.

CP is an innovative preschool child care model that utilizes the practice of inclusion by integrating children from our autism preschool into the community preschool.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) are guidelines set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for quality early childhood programs. Decisions about our program, curriculum, teacher/child interaction, child to teacher ratios, and parent/school collaboration are based on what is known about child development, what is known about the individual children in the class, and what is known about the society and the culture in which the children are involved. This philosophy emphasizes:

  • Social skills
  • An awareness of self and others
  • Building self-confidence through independence
  • Building self- esteem through problem-solving
  • Critical thinking and learning through play
  • Creativity
  • Nurturing relationships
  • A “community” atmosphere in the classroom
  • Hands-on curriculum experiences
